Class Gametogenesis, Fertilization and Early Embryo Development

    This curricular unit is fundamental for the basic knowledge of gemetes formation (male and female) and early embryo development.

    1. Espermatogenesis: formation and development
    2. Oogenesis: formation and development (nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation)
    3. Fertilization: capacitation and sperm acrosomic reaction, polyspermy prevention, pronuclei formation
    4. Embryo development


    • Collection and manipulation of male and female gamtes.
  • Objectives


    In the end of this Curricular Unit (UC) the student should understand well spermatogenesis, oogenesis, events during fertilization, and the first stages of embryo development. Theoretically, should understand the formation and development of gametes and in the laboratory student will be able to handle correctly the male and female gametes.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The UC has lectures given by invited speaker, experts in the specific subeject. Class will be given by e-learning and/or presencially, when possible, always with support of audiovisula media for better illustrate what is being discussed. There is a laboratory compoment, as well, in which the student will be familiarized with female and male gametes manipulation (for ethical reasons it will be used animal models).
