    Veterinary pharmacology is an experimental science dealing with the properties of drugs and their effects on living systems. It has included study of sources of drugs (pharmacognosy), magnitude and time course of the observed pharmacological effect on the body pharmacodynamics, relationship between administered doses and the observed biological fluid/tissue concentrations and time in the body pharmacokinetics , use in the treatment of diseases, and poisoning effects .The drugs include any chemical agent (other than food) used in the treatment, cure, prevention or diagnosis of disease, or the control of physiological processes. Clinical pharmacology in the veterinary setting is the clinical discipline devoted to the optimal use of drugs in veterinary patients, maximizing their prophylactic or therapeutic benefits while ensuring that adverse consequences are minimized. Nowadays, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology are disciplines contributing to the paradigma,One World, One Health.

    Syllabus

    Meaning of antibiotic and antimicrobial. Mechanisms of action, resistance and classification of antimicrobials. Use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry. Penicillins and related beta-lactam antibiotics. Tetracyclines and aminoglycosides. Sulfonamides and combinations thereof. Chloramphenicol, macrolides and lincosamides. Fluoroquinolones. Antifungal Drugs and Antiviral Drugs. Anthelmintics: Nematocides, cestodes and trematocides. Antiprotozoals and ectoparasiticides. Antineoplastic Chemotherapy, Immunomodulation and Gene Therapy. Pharmacology of the cardiovascular system. Digitalis and vasodilator drugs, antiarrhythmics, positive ionotropes and hypotensives agents. Pharmacology renal system. Principles of hydroelectrolytic balance and acid-base metabolism. Drugs used in acute and chronic renal failure. Routes of administration in livestock species.

    Objectives

    1- Continue the acquisition of knowledge about the fundamentals and general concepts of the development and use of veterinary drugs 2-To acquire knowledge on the pharmacology of the cardiovascular and renal systems, to integrate the therapeutic support with the selection of drugs for the different situations of pathology. 3-Acquire knowledge about chemotherapy and strategies of use aware of the risks of resistance and ways of eviction 4-To acquire knowledge about the groups of compounds that constitute the state of the art in veterinary pharmacological chemotherapy 5-Acquire skills to support the prescription and administration of drugs, monitor and monitor possible adverse reactions in animals, humans and effects on the environment, 6- Be aware of the possible permanence of pharmacological residues in foodstuffs for human consumption, and intervals of safety under good clinical practice in veterinary medicine and public health.
