This course aims to provide students with the technical skills needed to carry out critical discourse analysis processes in the context of Communication Sciences, and with the methodological tools of academic research for conducting studies in the media field. This training is essential in order to prepare students for critical media thinking. This course focuses on understanding discursive phenomena such as new language, neutral languages, ideologies and polarization in journalistic narratives.

Syllabus
1. Critical Journalism: Differences and similarities between social sciences and critical journalism; distinctions between news and criticism; research applied to criticism; concept of criticism. 2. History: Voltaire and his ‘Advice to Journalists’; milestones and figures in critical journalism. 3. In Portugal: Relevant examples, main critics and practices; ethics and deontology of journalistic criticism. 4. Current Crisis: Digital challenges; influence of sponsored content, especially in lifestyle; role of media literacy and critical thinking. 5. Specific Practices: Gastronomic, literary, musical, sports, film and visual arts criticism.

Objectives
Objectives
Understand the nature and importance of cultural criticism journalism in contemporary society. Distinguish critical journalism from other forms of journalism, such as news journalism and opinion journalism. Analyse the history and evolution of critical journalism, as well as its main challenges and trends. Develop the skills necessary for the production and analysis of quality critical journalism. Reflect on ethical and deontological issues related to the practice of critical journalism.
