Class Telecommunication Project

  • Presentation

    Presentation

    The scope of this unit encompasses the study and design of telecommunications networks in buildings,
    properly framed in the current norms and standards enforced in Portugal, the ITED 3 norm, that mirrors
    the current European legislation. The project management component, essential in any engineering field,
    is introduced according to PMI practices, and a fundamental set tools, needed for project management
    and decision making, is then addressed. The pertinence of this unit is then clear: (i) The design and
    installation of telecommunications networks in buildings, requires that a set of quality and reliability
    norms is upheld, and constitutes an asset which is of paramount importance in the workplace, in the field
    of telecommunications; (ii) The fundamental concepts of project management, and decision making, are,
    today, an essential tool that is applied transversely in any engineering field.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The student is expected to acquire the technical skills to, autonomously, design the telecommunications
    infrastructure of a building according to the norms in place (ITED3). The student will also be able to plan
    and manage his work, applying basic project management techniques. Finally, it is intended that the
    student acquires strong skills that allow one to answer the challenges of the workplace, in the areas of
    computer science applied to telecommunications, namely in the design and installation of
    telecommunications infrastructures and computer networks. The fundamental skills to develop are:

    1. Familiarization with the materials and components used in ITED networks;
    2. Familiarization with the design and installation rules of ITED networks;
    3. Familiarization with the use of CAD tools;
    4. Familiarization with the fundamental concepts of Project Management;

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The teaching methodology is divided into two components: (1) A strong theoretical component, where the fundamental concepts are lectured, and application problems solved; (2) Execution of a Telecommunications project. Evaluation is composed by

    Engineering project (50% of the final grade)
    - Designing of a telecommunications infrastructure for a building, applying the subjects taught during the lectures, and upholding the current norms and standards. This project is delivered at the end of the semester.
    - Minimum classification: 10.0 points.

    Theoretical test (50% of the final grade)

    - Two written tests, encompassing all of the subjects taught in the lectures and exams in the dates stated in the general regulations.
    - Oral exam (from which students with high leves of attendance and participation are exempt from)
    - Minimum classification: 10.0 points.

    The access to the Special Date Laboratory Exam is regulated by the Regulation for Curricular Units With Strong Laboratorial Component.
