Class Project on Energy and Power II

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This curricular unit exhibits a different profile when compared to other lectured curricular units since its nature is essentially practical, in a scenario of a specific problem, with precise objectives and specifications for which students are expected to develop, design, optimize and validate tangible solutions, through autonomous and collective research work.

As its designation implies, the areas of expertize where the projects take place are the areas of energy and electronic power systems, although the covered spectrum extends also to all the remaining areas of electro-technical engineering.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

The objectives are an extension of those that were defined for the curricular unit of Projeto de Energia e Potência I.

A - To develop the design capacity in electric power and power systems, in particular in the areas of power systems, power electronics, industrial electronics, electronic actuators, electric machines, active power filters, interface converters for renewable energy sources and the AC mains, and electrical systems.

B - To stimulate the research work and analysis of existing solutions in the fields of energy and power engineering, as well as to develop the students' critical analysis and result interpretation.

C - To develop students' sensitivity to the problems of power quality, energy efficiency and harmonic distortion, among others.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The total number of attendance lectures per week is 3,5. During an initial phase the lecture times will be more focused on presentation and discussion of theoretical subjects, during which the introductory aspects will be exposed as well as the detailed syllabus. Once all the projects are defined for each group (groups with no more than 3 students are recommended), the lecture time will be mainly oriented towards the monitoring and development of the each project.

The assessment is based on two parts:

    - the performance obtained in the project report that should be composed by a document concerning the work assigned to each group

    - the performance obtained in the oral presentation of the works. This last component is individual for all students.

This curricular unit is categorized as having a strong laboratory component and is therefore subject to the specific assessment directives for CUs of this nature.

    References

In this curricular unit, the students' ability to collect bibliographic materials is encouraged.

In addition to the materials collected by the students, some didactic resources, such as publications and scientific papers, are also suggested according to each group specific project.
