    With this course students are expected to acquire scientific, technological and technical knowledge of advanced-level power electronics.

    Theoretical lecture develops in six phases. In the first one, basic knowledge about the static and dynamic behavior of several electronic devices is verified, as well as the ability to analyze control circuits, drivers and protections necessary for the same devices.

    The following four phases are designed to develop the ability to analyze power electronic circuits, namely AC / DC converters, DC / DC converters, DC / AC converters, AC / AC converters in their various topologies, the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages associated with each topology.

    The sixth is intended for the electromagnetic principles of electric machines in order to their better control and energetic efficiency.

    Description of contents

    1. Most common semiconductor devices used in power electronics: static and dynamic characteristics of operation; characterization and definition of safe operating zone; di/dt and dv/dt protection.

    2. Static power converters. Transients in circuits with diodes and thyristors.

    3. Rectifiers not controlled by diodes. Thyristor controlled rectifiers.

    4. AC/DC Converters.

    5. DC/DC Converters.

    6. Switched Mode Power Supplies.

    7. Current inverters.

    8. Mechanical converters and control of electrical machines.

    Objectives

    - Acquisition of scientific, technological and technical knowledge of advanced-level power electronics.

    - Acquisition of knowledge about the static and dynamic behavior of various electronic devices, as well as the ability to analyze control circuits, drivers and protections necessary for them.

    - Advanced analysis and synthesis of electronic circuits dedicated to static power conversion.

    - Design of switched mode power supplies.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    In order to support the teaching-learning process, in theoretical classes, numerous references are made to use cases in an industrial context, in order to fully illustrate cases of use of the theoretical subject.
    
    In laboratory classes, simulation and support tools for the design of electronic circuits are used, later illustrated with the help of finished examples of application in an industrial environment.
    
    The consultation of several relevant sites is also promoted, as well as the promotion of study visits within the scope of the curricular unit.
