Class Cognitive Processes II - Memory and Language

The curricular unit "Cognitive Processes II - Memory and Language" integrates contents about two essential domains of human cognition, and it is important that students in this study cycle in Psychology develop their knowledge about the processes, bases, normal development through the lifespan and disorders in this scope, simultaneously developing the ability to think at an abstract level, and transfer and apply this knowledge. This domain is basic for subsequent study cycles in the field of Psychology, as its content will be further developed, namely, in Clinical Psychology, Educacional Psychology, and Neuropsychology.

I . Memory

1. Conceptual foundations;
2. Taxonomies of memory pertaining to length, storage capacity, and functioning;
3. Historical content and development of research about memory in Psychology;
4. Cognitive perspective of information processing in memory; Main theoretical models;
5. General notions about Memory deficits and dysfunction;
6. The experimental method in the study of memory processes.

II. Language

1. Conceptual foundations.
2. Theoretical perspectives about language acquisition and development.
3. Cognitive processes associated to speech perception and reading
4. Cognitive processes associated to language comprehension
5. Cognitive processes associated to language production
6. Experimental methods in the study of language.
7. General notions about oral and written language disorders.

The theoretical contents are transmitted through expositive and participative methodologies, complemented by the practical methodologies of the laboratory classes (execution of experimental tasks, writing of experimental reports, analyzing, and discussing scientific papers).
