    The UC of Art and Tourism encompasses the History of Art concerning Portugal and relates it to Tourism in the forms of supply and demand. The focus is on the identification, characterization and understanding of the Art developed in the various historical periods, developing in the student the knowledge of Portuguese heritage resources and references to Western European Art. Art is essential in tourism and in the construction of Cultural Tourism and, being taught in the 2nd year, this UC develops and structures the student's knowledge base, combining history, artistic movements and the most representative heritage references of Portugal.

    1. Introduction to Art and Tourism

    1. Art history and its methodology; Art, power, Identities and tourism; Art as a tourist attraction factor in urban and rural contexts; Art, museums and tourism; Importance of Art for Tourism and Tourism for the dissemination of Art; International perspective on conservation and use of the work of art; EU Guidelines on the relationship between Art and Tourism.

    2. Art and Tourism in Europe and the Mediterranean

    1. Prehistory;
    2. Pre-Classical Antiquity: Egypt and Mesopotamia;
    3. Classical Antiquity: Greece and Rome;
    4. Christian and Islamic Medievality;
    5. NeoClassicism and the affirmation of "classical antiquities";
    6. Mannerism and the emergence of the "national antiquities";
    7. Baroque and celebratory splendor;
    8. Neoclassicism and preludes of Tourism: the Grand Tour;
    9. Contemporaneity: between Romanticism and Land-Art.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    To demonstrate the relevance of culture in general and art in particular in motivating and developing tourism, as well as its permanent interrelationship, especially with the arts of Europe, considered by the EU as one of the two core pillars of the promotion of European Tourism; To explain the concept of 'art' and the levels of 'iconographic' and 'iconological' interpretation, understanding the emergence of art and artistic production as expressions to be contextualized geographically and historically, interiorising different artistic movements, styles, categories and typologies, also recognising their respective orderers, performers and users. To provide students with the tools and resources essential to the development of different specific skills.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    In order to bring the learning methodologies closer to the current guidelines for student-centred teaching, the following actions will be applied:
    It is intended to use Moodle to streamline the exchange of information gathered and the discussion between the groups on the topics under analysis that will be carried out in an environment external to the classroom environment. The use of this platform for these purposes corresponds to the A3ES guideline in order to stimulate and promote "learning communities in virtual environments" and "cooperative learning".
    Interactive Exposure will be preferably applied, together with methods centred on Inquiry and Cooperation, promoting individual student participation and their integration in working and research groups. The already used Problem-Based Learning and Case Studies methods will be reinforced in the approach to the labour market, guided visits and practical classes, fulfilling the A3ES guideline "Learning in the Workspace".
