Inserted in the area of ¿¿research and development Society, Governance and Territorial Administration - focuses on the relations between society and the use of space from the perspective of governance and territorial management, and comprises participatory decisions to improve the quality of urban space. It lists, in a transversal way, the physical and social issues, including the necessary administrative tools and regulatory measures to improve the management and efficient use of the territory and its resources.
How to improve planning, management and evaluation tools, including participation, for territorial efficiency while respecting the needs and desires of communities. It encourages reflection on the best tools for governance and management of the territory in a participatory and sustainable way, promoting better urban spaces, where people understand how it works and feels integrated into the development of a sustainable territory.

Objectives
Objectives
The objectives of this UC are to reflect on the organization of society and its way of responding to essential questions of citizens' lives, such as housing, mobility and the existence of a minimum set of social equipment, quality of life, defense of nature and natural resources, the quality of public space. It intends to reflect on public policies and strategies affecting the territory, on territorial and social cohesion, identity, and attractiveness, but also on the competitiveness of urban spaces and cities. It addresses the competencies of the institutions, the participation of citizens, and the proper procedures of urban administrative activity in planning land use and interventions, namely for urban rehabilitation. It also addresses the themes associated with the strategies, instruments, acts, and activities of execution of the planning instruments.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
The assessment process, based on the preparation of a paper (scientific article) for each course on the topic covered in class, on the basis of the defined syllabus and, tentatively, the exploration of and reaction to the student's own research topic, is a factor that motivates the achievement of knowledge, enhances the consolidation of knowledge and the transversal relationship between the different topics (and essentially with the chosen research topic), helping the practice of effective communication of research results.
