Rui Pedro Brás Martins Faisca

Resume

I am an Assistant Professor and Vice-Dean at the FMV, Universidade Lusofona (UL). Additionally, I am Head of the Histopathology Department at a private veterinary diagnostic laboratory (DNAtech), and I am  the Experimental pathologist of the Histopathology Facility at Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM). These three positions, complement each other, intertwine, and enhance who I am today as a scientist and veterinary pathologist. At the university, where I spent most of my time, I can interact and focus my attention on Veterinary Medicine in general and veterinary pathology in particular. The academic environment fosters close connections with veterinarians from various sub-disciplines, providing exposure to multiple animal species and areas of expertise. Furthermore, due to the existence of other health-related degrees, I can interact and collaborate with colleagues from other fields, such as biologists and pharmacists, with whom I have developed several projects. At DNATech, I receive thousands of analyses to evaluate each year. Much of my practical experience stems from this activity, particularly my knowledge and interest in oncology. Approximately 90% of the cases I receive are oncological cases, and over the course of about 20 years, I have refined my diagnostic capabilities, as well as my interest in studying and improving both diagnostic methods and tumor grading. This activity has also made me realize the need to create and collaborate on the development of a national veterinary oncology registry. The most challenging and transformative experience in terms of how I perceive pathology and my focus on research, has been from my work at GIMM. Here, I am often asked not to provide a diagnosis, but to quantify a lesion, the size of an organ, the volume of a tumor, etc. The need to provide quantitative data to researchers that can be objectively and precisely compared, has led me to focus in recent years on quantitative pathology, leading me to deepen my expertise in stereology, digital pathology and advanced image analysis. My activity as a lecturer and researcher for about 20 years has allowed me to collaborate with multiple partners, resulting in close to ninety scientific publications and several research projects. Among those publications, I highlight the ones published in high impact journals, related to veterinary oncology (#11), fundamental research (#13) and pharmacology (#16). Among the research projects, I highlight 3 funded projects by FCT & Portugal 2020: - NETA project - New Strategies for Wastewater Treatment POCI-01-0247-FEDER-046959 - Nanoplatforms for targeted treatment of melanoma with metal complexes derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline PTDC/QUI-QIN/0586/2020 10.54499/PTDC/QUI-QIN/0586/2020.  - A multicenter collaborative study of rare and unusual mammary tumors of dogs and cats: clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and genetic characterization - UIDB/CVT/00772/2020 (CECAV), UIDB/00276/2020 (CIISA), LA/P/0059/2020 and AL4A-PROJ-LT3.2 (AL4AnimalS). In 2013, I was appointed Secretary of the Portuguese Society of Animal Pathology (SPPA), a position I held for two consecutive terms before being elected President. During my mandates, I organised the Society’s annual scientific meetings, hosted by different Veterinary Medicine institutions across Portugal, and established the annual award for the best master’s thesis in Veterinary Pathology, promoting excellence among early-career researchers. Within the Portuguese Society of Veterinary Sciences (SPCV), I served one term as President of the Fiscal Council and currently act as Secretary of the Executive Board.
