Class Reproductive Biology

    Presentation

Biology of Reproduction has become the central area of ¿¿both animal reproduction and Human Reproduction. It is important, therefore, that in a cycle of studies in Biology, the students contact with a theme with strong presence and potential in the field of scientific investigation, animal production and conservation, and human health. This last branch has become an area of ¿¿great research activity in cellular and molecular biology, endocrinology, medical genetics, pharmacy, physiology, as well as technological development - eg optimization of medical and laboratory equipment and devices. It is also a current topic of political debate and national and international regulation. Finally, the title "Embryology Specialist / Human Reproduction" is recognized by the " Ordem dos Biologos" . ESHRE recognizes Embryologist as a profession. It thus becomes an area that brings together, in its basis and application, several areas of the life sciences and is in frank expansion and development

  • Objectives

    Objectives

Throughout the semester, students should gradually acquire competencies at the level of spermatogenesis, oogenesis and folliculogenesis interdependence, in vivo and in vitro fertilization mechanisms, early embryonic development, and potential and limitations of in vitro systems. Students should also acquire competencies at the level of the main causes of infertility and Assisted Reproduction Techniques (ART). They should acknowledge the importance of ART techniques in their extension to the non-infertile population, such as Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnostic, sperm washing in sero-discordant couples and cryopreservation in oncological situations. Students should be able to identify the main bodies that legislate on ART and discuss the main ethical and legal implications associated with retrieving, manipulating, using and storing gametes, embryos and germ tissues.
