    - To Provide students with the necessary historical knowledge so that they can understand and critically reflect on the Portuguese society and its integration in the international system;
    - Conhecer e distinguir as principais conjunturas e sistemas políticos vigentes no país desde o final do século XIX;
    - To know and distinguish the main conjunctures and political systems in force in the country since the end of the 19th century;
    - To foster knowledge of the past in order to better understand its impact on the present day;
    - To introduce the main literature on the topics covered by the program and to present different historiographical interpretations;
    - Reflect critically on the present uses of History.

    History and Journalism.
    The 1890 Ultimatum and the Crisis of the Portuguese Constitutional Monarchy.
    The First Republic.
    Portugal during World War I.
    The crisis and fall of the First Portuguese Republic.
    The 28 May 1926 coup d'état, Salazar's rise to power and the institutionalization of the New State.
    The Portuguese Neutrality during World War II.
    The crises of the regime.
    The Colonial War and its impact.
    Marcelismo: The end of the New State.
    The Portuguese Revolution and the transition to democracy.
    Portugal and the European Economic Community.

    Objectives

    Students should know the main facts, dates and political actors that marked the Portuguese from the crisis of the constitutional monarchy until the accession of Portugal to the European Economic Community. They should analyse historical issues with the purpose of understand the present. Provide study skills to find and evaluate information sources and to develop search strategies.
