    In this course we will explore the basis of management theory and its relation to the design field. We will consider as well the way in which management emerges from modernity and industrialization. Furthermore, we will take into account some of the criticism towards the managerial class and the power structures determining a managerial model. Finally, we will look at forms and methods of self-organization: cooperation, codes of conduct, consensus building, etc. Next to this theoretical part, we will zoom in in the practice of managing and directing through real-life case studies.

    Syllabus

    The course weaves a historical and critical understanding of management touching upon the following themes:

     

    - Scientific Management from Frederick Taylor to Frank and Lillian Gilbreth

    - Productivity and time-tracking techniques

    - Critiques of the quantified self

    - Decision-making protocols

    - Consensus-based decision making

    - Methods for collaboration

    - Decision support tools (Decision tree, influence diagram, etc.)

    Objectives

    At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

     

    • apply skills of critical analysis to real situations within a defined range of contexts;

    • select and define a research topic and implement a research plan using appropriate methods;

    • express ideas effectively and communicate information appropriately and accurately;

    • critically analyse results and draw logical conclusions;

    • develop working relationships using teamwork skills, recognising and respecting different perspectives;

    • manage their professional development reflecting on progress and taking appropriate action;

    • find, evaluate, synthesise and use information from a variety of sources;

    • articulate an awareness of the social and community contexts within their disciplinary field;

    • exercise initiative and personal responsibility in the work environment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Design Critiques and Feedback Sessions: Regular design critiques where students present their work and receive constructive feedback from peers and instructors. This promotes a culture of open communication, fosters a growth mindset, and improves the overall quality of design projects.

     

    Online Collaboration Platforms: Use of online collaboration tools to facilitate group projects, discussions, and knowledge sharing. Platforms like Slack, Trello, or Miro can enhance communication and productivity among students, both in and outside of the classroom.

     

    Design Ethnography and Field Studies: Students are engaged in design ethnography and field studies to observe and analyze user behaviors and environments. This approach provides valuable insights into user needs and preferences, aiding in the development of user-centered design and management strategies.
