Resume
Daniel Seabra, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and researcher specializing in the mental health and well-being of sexual and gender minority populations. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona – School of Psychology and Life Sciences, where he teaches and supervises graduate research in clinical psychology and sexology. He obtained his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Coimbra, awarded with praise and distinction. His doctoral research focused on psychological processes underlying mental health disparities among sexual minority individuals and on the development of an innovative affirmative intervention integrating mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion-based approaches (Free2Be). His research program lies at the intersection of clinical psychology, minority stress, and contextual behavioral science, aiming to understand how stigma-related processes - such as shame, self-criticism, discrimination, and social threat - affect mental health and well-being in sexual and gender minority populations. A central focus of his work is the identification of protective psychological mechanisms, including self-compassion, social safeness, and psychological flexibility, as well as the development and evaluation of affirmative psychological interventions targeting these processes. Daniel Seabra has an active and growing international publication record in peer-reviewed journals in clinical psychology, sexual health, and behavioral science. His work has contributed to advancing the conceptualization and measurement of minority stress processes, including the validation of psychometric instruments and empirical models linking stigma-related experiences to mental health outcomes. He has also contributed to the empirical evaluation of affirmative, compassion-based interventions for sexual minority individuals. Beyond academic research, his work has a strong translational and societal impact component, focusing on the promotion of mental health equity for LGBTQIA+ populations. He has collaborated with community organizations and public institutions in research and intervention projects addressing discrimination, social support, and mental health in LGBTQIA+ communities, including initiatives developed in partnership with ILGA Portugal and other organizations. In addition to his research activities, he supervises master's theses in clinical psychology and sexology on topics such as minority stress, emotion regulation, sexual health, and psychological flexibility. Through teaching, supervision, and collaboration with civil society organizations, he actively contributes to the training of future professionals and researchers in affirmative and evidence-based psychological practice. Daniel Seabra is a member of the Portuguese Psychologists Association, the Portuguese Association for Behaviour Therapy, and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science. His work has received several recognitions, including academic awards for research and contributions to LGBTQIA+ mental health.
