Resume

In the last years, the research has been mainly focused on interactive rehabilitation systems using Virtual Reality. Micaela Fonseca is the PI of VR4NeuroPain and Com@Rehab. VR4NeuroPain is a renowned project, which has been awarded with several distinctive prizes. Com@Rehab is a collaborative research project awarded by Santander/NOVA that aims to facilitate health communication using VR. Micaela is Co-PI of PlayersAll: media agency and empowerment (EXPL/COM-OUT/0882/2021) funded by FCT. The idea in PlayersAll is to carry out a VR game development process for a target-group of patients with motor dysfunction in occupational therapy, including occupational therapists as game stakeholders. Micaela Fonseca is Physics Engineer and obtained her PhD in Physics/ Speciality: Nuclear Physics (NOVA FCT, 2011) and became expert in data analysis, signal processing, ion beam techniques (PIGE, NRA) and applied them in the analysis of objects of biomedical interest (dentine fluorine uptake, osteoporosis) and cultural interest. After PhD, Micaela was a researcher at the Physics Department at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany and GSI (Experimental Astrophysics group). Since 2012, she has been an invited Assistant Professor at NOVA FCT for Biomedical Engineering, Physics Engineering (Nuclear Physics lecturer) and researcher at LIBPhys-UNL. Published 37 articles in journals, 14 conference papers, 1 book chapter and 4 books. Micaela has organized 8 events between international conferences, summer schools and outreach activities. Currently, Micaela is supervisor of 1 PhD thesis, Supervisor 1 MSc and Co-supervisor 3 MSc dissertations. Supervised 6 MSc dissertations and co-supervised 8. Has received 6 awards and/or honors. Between 2013 and 2020, Micaela was Assistant Professor at IADE/UE and co-founded Games for Good, the greatest game jam for social responsibility in Portugal. At IADE/UE innovation teams, she participated in the organization of two new degrees: Games and Apps Development and Creative Tech. As IADE pedagogical practices coordinator Micaela was responsible for several projects where creativity was in full synergy with technology. Since 02/2020, Micaela is Principal Researcher of HEI-Lab - Digital Human-Environment Lab, Playful Interaction Design Lab coordinator and Assistant Professor at Lusófona University: Videogames BA. Since 2022, she is member of the HEI-Lab¿s direction board. Moreover, Micaela is a member of the team more directly involved with the submission of an Erasmus Mundus European Games Design and Production Master's and the new Portuguese master's degree in Game Design at Universidade Lusófona (approved for 6y A3ES). Micaela is editor of the International Journal of Games and Social Impact and was conference general chair Games and Social Impact Media Research Lab Conference (GLOW21) and will be local Chair Foundations of Digital Games 2023. Micaela is a member of the COST Action (CA 19104) - advancing Social inclusion through Technology and EmPowerment (a-Step) and Erasmus+ projects, namely: ID Games (2019-1-EL01-KA204-062517), Youth For Youth (2020-2-HU01-KA205-079126), TEGA (2020-1-UK01-KA203-079248) and iDEAL (2020-1-DK01-KA204).
