Class Soil Mechanics

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Introduction to classical soil mechanics, in order to perceive the behavior of the different types of soils from a geotechnical point of view. This curricular unit is fundamental for the sizing of foundation systems of buildings, bridges and other special structures.

  • Syllabus

    Syllabus

    1. Introduction to soil mechanics
    2. Soil physics: basic properties, identification and classification of soils.
    3. Stresses, strains and elastic deformation of soils.
    4. Soil hydraulics: water in soils and percolation.
    5. Mechanical behaviour of soils: shear strength, assessment tests.
    6. Compressibility and consolidation of fine-grained soils.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

Introduction to classical soil mechanics as Civil Engineering material. It is intended that students learn the basics of the physical, mechanical and hydraulic behaviour of soils.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

Active teaching methodology places the student at the centre of the learning process. Students are encouraged to solve autonomously exercises for evaluation, having the opportunity to discuss with their peers the methodology to solve the problems. This process will allow students to develop critical thinking, increasing their problem-solving capacity.
