The aim of this subject is to consolidate the mathematical theory studied in Calculus and Signal and Systems, from a practical point of view. Software implementations of the mathematical concepts are studied in Matlab, showing the practical application of the concepts.

Revision of key concepts of Signals and Systems. Discrete signals. Special sequences. Discrete systems. Convolution. Difference equations. Fourier discrete transform. Representation of linear and time-invariant systems in the frequency domain. Sampling and reconstruction of signals using the Fourier Transform. Z transform. Inverse z transform. Representation of a time-invariant and linear system through the Z transform. Solution of difference equations. Implementation of discrete-time filters. Structures of IIR filters. Structures of FIR filters. FIR filter design in the case of linear phase. Transient and stationary response. Graphical representation of the filter response in the frequency domain. Techniques for FIR filter design. IIR filter design. General equation of the filters. Poles and zeros. Frequency domain response. Band transformation. Comparison between FIR and IIR filters.

Objectives
Knowledge: Digital filters applied to signal transmission. Evaluation of the quality of digitalization of signals, considering: Signal amplification, sampling and noise filtering. Skills: Evaluation of signal transmission problems, applying the knowledge acquired on actual problems. Competences: Analysis and Syntesis of signals using Matlab tools.

A nota de avaliação contínua corresponderá à média ponderada, arredondada para a décima, das notas dos testes escritos e dos trabalhos de acordo coma seguinte ponderação: 10% para cada trabalho prático (com um total de 3 trabalhos), 32% para o primeiro teste, 32% para o segundo teste, e 16% para as fichas de trabalho individual. Caso o aluno não aprove nas frequências, haverá um Exame de recurso. Para obter aprovação na disciplina a nota mínima média dos testes é 9 valores e a nota mínima média dos trabalhos é 9 valores, tanto para os trabalhos práticos de laboratório como para as fichas individuais de trabalho.
Os trabalhos de laboratório abordam 3 temas:
1º Trabalho: Pretende que os alunos verifiquem a amostragem certa de sinais contínuos, para a sua posterior reconstrução, assim como uma pequena introdução aos filtros digitais.
2º Trabalho: Pretende analisar a transformada Z de vários tipos de filtros digitais utilizados na música.
3º Trabalho: Pretende fazer o projecto de filtros digitais de resposta finita assim como de resposta infinita, aplicando-os a músicas gravadas.
