Class Introduction to Statistics for the Social Sciences

The raison d'être of this curricular unit is to sensitize students to the importance of statistics (and quantitative methods). This is important for: - systematize large amounts of information - through statistical indicators (immediate interpretation). - describe and understand relationships between variables and identify the most important relationships to make better and faster decisions and make more informed judgments.

Contents Description:

1. Introduction: data types, notion of variable, types, operationalization, nature and measurement levels

2. Descriptive statistics: mean, median, mode, frequencies, percentage, skewness, kurtosis, range, interquartile ranges

3. Association between variables

4. Probabilities and significance levels,

5. Population and sample, types of samples

6. Parametric and non-parametric statistics

7. Chi-square tests

8. The statistical treatment of data with the IBM/SPSS package

9. Data interpretation

10. Presentation of statistics in reports
