Class Architecture and Digital Project II

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This curricular unit focuses on the development of architectures based on digital collaborative platforms, enabling a (vast) set of generative design solutions. The ¿generative¿ domain implies not only the application of principles of generation of the form relative to a specific program using a certain software, but also the adoption of different digital work processes. It is intended to stimulate the study of new methodological approaches that give critical capacity regarding the ¿generative design¿ enhancing the student's skills as a designer. This potential is revealed through the computation associated with the architectural project, that is, the creative application of the processes and reasoning underlying digital computational technologies. These contents derive from the PDII discipline where the participants were introduced to the theme relating to CAD-CAE-CAM processes and digital media.

    Syllabus

Provide innovative tools that will enhance students' design skills, based on computational techniques applied to design and architecture. Establish the theoretical bases that will enable to develop a discourse centered on algorithmic design strategies and the logic of emerging systems, digital generation of drawings. Study parametric systems at a more advanced level, systems used to develop new analysis and control processes that enhance creativity. Introduce knowledge of different digital manufacturing techniques. Encourage research, exploration and investigation in generative computational design processes.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The course presents computing associated with the architectural project as a means that allows architects to design their projects without being totally dependent on commercial software. The objective of the course focuses on the elaboration of specific processes and tools (computational-digital) to assist the design of the project in architecture, techniques and work processes responding to the complex needs of contemporary architecture, and to explore forms generated only by the use computational logic. Introduce students to different methods of digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping, namely those corresponding to additive and subtractive techniques, among others, providing the manufacture of models and models with these tools.
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The work methodologies to be implemented involve the resolution of exercises / projects demonstrating the consolidation of the knowledge acquired throughout the semester, through research tasks reaching the objectives of the UC focusing on the development of generative and computational processes and the manufacture of models. Two exercises will be developed to summarize the themes covered throughout the semester. Exercises 1 and 2 must be presented publicly. Exercise 1: 30%; exercise 2: 30%; Intermediate exercises (A, B, C and D): 30%. Attendance: 10%. Attendances of less than 75% make it impossible to take advantage of the Continuous Assessment regime (except student workers). Only students who do not approve the discipline with a minimum of 50% attendance and delivery of at least one work can be presented to Exame.
