Class Urban Design I

  • Presentation

    Presentation

This course aims to introduce architecture students to placemaking and the discourse of public space. The articulation with History of Cities and the theories of urban space are put into practice with the introduction of tools for analysing Urban Morphology. These contents aim to awaken in students a sensitivity to understanding and acting on the problems of urban and public space. The theory part focuses the city as a complex phenomenon, its profound morphological problematics and different typological aspects. Here, analysis methodologies are introduced that allow students to reflect on urban reality, spatial structure and the meanings of the locus.

    - Critical reflection through sensitive and intelligible analysis of the urban fabric based on experienced urban site visits and studies. - The urban phenomenon as a time based process of growth and transformation (morphogenesis), taking into account aspects of rupture and aspects of continuity in urban morphology.  - Territorial analysis with the support of interactive digital platforms/tools (GIS; others) and/or other relevant documents about different aspects of urban analysis: historical cartography consulting and specific criteria (topography, morphological units, building typologies, functions, constraints, etc.). - Theories and urban models through case studies (paths, districts, urban fragments, etc). - Topological, typological, heritage, environmental/landscape, social, cultural, aesthetic and symbolic thematics.  - The creation of a critical reflection through site focused architectural/urban design operativity
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The curricular unit of Urban Design II aims to acquire and understand theories, concepts, and principles that give the student the necessary methodological tools when called upon to intervene in the urban/public space. It is intended with practical work to be carried out during the semester, that the student put into practice the knowledge acquired. Finally, it is intended to make students aware of the implications that urban design has on the shape of the city and the need to ensure integration between scales, sectors, and actors in the elaboration of the same.
