Syllabus
This curricular unit includes the following contents: - Cutaneous surgery and surgical management of wounds; - Head and neck surgery: buccal, nasal and pharyngeal cavity, maxillary sinuses, salivary glands, ear, larynx and trachea; -Ophthalmologic surgery; -Access to the abdominal cavity, reproductive surgery (ovariohysterectomy, castration), herniorrhaphy; -Gastrointestinal surgery: esophagus and stomach; -Gastrointestinal surgery: small intestine, large intestine, and anus; -Hepatic and pancreatic surgery; - Urinary Surgery: cystotomy, urethrotomy, urethrostomy, nephrotomy, nephrostomy, and ectopic ureters; -Thoracic Surgery: surgical access, pleural space, heart, diaphragm, mediastinum, upper airways, and lung; - Perineal, genitourinary, and mammary gland surgery: mastectomy; - Muscle, tendon, and nerve surgery; -Orthopedic surgery;

Objectives
Objectives
Objective 1- Introduce and explain to students the pathophysiological concepts related to the most significant surgical diseases in companion animals. Objective 2 - Students should, at the end of the course, be able to perform a clinical diagnosis of diseases with a well-founded surgical scope; Objective 3 - Students should also be able to identify a surgical indication, as well as choose the surgical technique best suited to each case; Objective 4 - Perform the diagnosis and surgical treatment, as well as anamnesis, epidemiological constraints, complementary diagnoses, differential diagnoses, and therapeutic alternatives

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Theoretical classes: exposition of the subject to be studied; Practical classes: surgical techniques, clinical cases in the School Veterinary Hospital, clinical skill labs; Compulsory attendance to classes (exception student worker): > 2/3 theoretical classes (theoretical continuous evaluation); > 2/3 practical classes (practice continuous evaluation and exam). Student worker status: additional assessment scheme applied (additional works, written and /or oral test). Evaluation methods: A - Continuous evaluation: 1) Practice: Individual cont. assessment- Hospital (20%) + Individual cont. assessment Anatomy/Lab skills (20%) + Supervised self learning (case report) (30%) + Surgical tech. anatomy (30%) 2) Theoretical: 1 test; Approval: > 9.5V Failure to pass theor. and /or prac.: can perform the missing component in examination periods B-Final exam Approval: Approval:> 9.5 V (totality contents); Students with 8-9,4v: have access to oral exam Final grade (continuous or exam): theor (50%) + prac. (50%).
