Class Cytology and Histology I

  • Presentation

    Presentation

    The Citology and Histology I unit studies the cells and tissues of the organism, using microscopes. In the pratical classes a microscope will be used to observe the different tissues. It is followed by Citology and Hitology II (in the second semester), where the content of this course is required to understand the constitution of the organs of the organism.

    Summary of contents:

    - Histological technique: Main fixation methods of tissues and cells, tissue processing and main stains.

    - Microscope: The microscope as main study instrument of cells and tissues. Differences between various types of microscopy and their uses.

    - Animal cell: Recognition of morphology and cell constituents, relating to physiology.

    - Epithelial tissue: epithelial lining and glandular tissue. Classification and functions.

    - Connective tissue: Connective tissue cells and extracellular matrix. Relationship between the various components and the types of connective tissues (proper, fat, bone, cartilage and blood)

    - Muscle tissue: muscle tissue types, morphology and contraction of muscle fibers mechanisms.

    - Nervous tissue: cells of the nervous tissue. Nerve impulse conduction between cells.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    During the course it is intended that the student acquires knowledge to:

    1. Understand the fundamentals of the methodology used in the preparation of cells and tissues to be studied by optical microscopy and electron microscopy;

    2. Know the different types of microscopes and applications for each type.

    3. Know how to properly handle an optical microscope, including the use of the immersion objective.

    4. Know the structure and ultrastructure of cells and tissues of animals, with veterinary interest in order to achieve their correct identification, by observing the optical microscope;

    5. Establish a relationship between the morphology and function of cells and tissues.
