    Presentation

This curricular unit is offered in the 5th year of the integrated master's degree course in Veterinary Medicine (following the restructuring program), and is part of three major areas (Companion Animal Medicine; Production Animals and Equines; Health Inspection and Zootechnics). These major areas are taught in blocks (of subjects) over a period of five weeks, successively. Thus, throughout each five-week block, students have daily contact and experience associated with each specific area.

    2. Biotechnologies used in animal breeding
    3. Animal welfare
    4. Small ruminant production in the tropics
    5. Poultry with creatopoietic aptitude (chickens)
    6. Apis Melliferas bee

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    1. Identify and describe, in the context of animal production, the knowledge and skills required to resolve issues in the various fields of applied animal production and breeding.

    2. Evaluate, among the production systems commonly used, the most relevant aspects that characterize the different production systems, classify the systems used and the possible management schemes used for ruminants and poultry.

    3. Understand animal breeding programs, including new biotechnologies, and analyze the impact of using these tools on production parameters and product quality.

    4. Evaluate production systems in terms of their environmental impact, and propose the use of methods and techniques to mitigate the effect of greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The teaching methodologies include theoretical and theoretical-practical (TP) classes. The class material prepared by the teachers, as well as scientific articles, will be made available to students in the course's online space (Moodle), available on the institutional platform.

In the TP component, students work in groups of 4-5 students on animal production projects in which the areas of welfare, nutrition, reproduction, animal breeding and health are developed under tutorial guidance in the context of conventional systems (intensive, semi-intensive or extensive) and their conversion to organic systems.
