I. From early cinema until 25th April Revolution:
- Silent cinema and the avant-gardes: the global 1920s
- The transition to sound and the “classic period”
- Propaganda cinema and colonial cinema
- Other genres: the bulk of archival film collections
- Modern cinema
- Militant cinema and ethnographic documentary (1970s)
II. From the eighties to contemporary cinema
- Public funding and film education. Film distribution and exhibition crisis in the 80’s
- Paulo Branco and the rise of Portuguese cinema in Europe
- Portuguese author cinema and spectatorship
- Contemporary cinema and the use of film archive
- Film festivals and short films
- Animation film: from Filmógrafo to feature film public funding

Objectives
Objectives
In this course we analyse the history of Portuguese cinema from an archival perspective, looking in particular at restored films and those using archive footage, in order to highlight cinema as a heritage of humanity.
- know and identify the different stages in the history of Portuguese cinema;
- in this process to learn about the processes of restoration and preservation of Portuguese film heritage.
