Objectives
Objectives
In this course we analyse the history of Portuguese cinema from an archival perspective, looking in particular at restored films and those using archive footage, in order to highlight cinema as a heritage of humanity. - know and identify the different stages in the history of Portuguese cinema; - in this process to learn about the processes of restoration and preservation of Portuguese film heritage.

The classes will be expository and will discuss the topic under analysis, using film screenings or other audiovisual documents.

Assessment
Assessment
A avaliação consiste na entrega de um ensaio sobre um dos seis temas (três sobre a primeira parte do programa e outros três sobre a segunda parte). Cada aluno escolhe um tema de trabalho. Não pode haver repetições, ou seja, dois alunos não podem trabalhar sobre o mesmo tema. A avaliação do ensaio vale os 100% da nota final. Em caso de reprovação o aluno terá a oportunidade de refazer o ensaio em época de exame.
The assessment consists of a paper on one of the six topics (three on the first part of the programme and another three on the second part) that will be made available in the first class. Each student chooses a topic to work on. There can be no repetition, i.e. two students cannot work on the same topic. The paper is graded as final mark. In the event of failure, the student will have the opportunity to redo the paper in the exam evaluation timetable.
Os temas de trabalho para a avaliação são:
1º parte:
- o papel dos arquivos na (re)descoberta do cinema de património;
- o cinema português numa perspetiva internacional;
- cinema português e géneros cinematográficos.
2ª parte:
- o uso de imagens de arquivo no cinema português contemporâneo: estudo de caso;
- análise da obra de um realizador;
- o cinema português e o seu público.
The work themes for the assessment are:
Part 1:
- the role of archives in the (re)discovery of heritage cinema;
- portuguese cinema from an international perspective;
- Portuguese cinema and film genres.
2nd part:
- the use of archive footage in contemporary portuguese cinema: case study;
- analysis the work of a film director;
- Portuguese cinema and its audience.
