Building an inclusive society requires accepting human diversity, with the goal of understanding, recognizing, and providing equal opportunities for all people by removing barriers and celebrating differences and human value.
This process involves changes in educational practices, the dissemination of legislation, and raising awareness at educational, organizational, and political levels.
In Portugal, it is estimated that around 120,000 people have some degree of hearing loss, and 30,000 communicate through Portuguese Sign Language. These figures show that, although it is a minority community, sign language plays an important role in promoting preventive measures against exclusion and social isolation. Despite most deaf people using this language, challenges still remain.
Currently, there is a need for more Portuguese Sign Language interpreters across services and society, as well as greater opportunities and accessibility for this community. Challenges persist, but together, progress can be made towards eliminating these barriers in everyday life.
