Elisa Piedras is a Full Professor in the Department of Communication and the Graduate Programme in Communication at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. She is the leader of the Communication and Cultural Practices Research Group, Coordinator of the Research Project “Directions in Advertising Research: Mapping Academic Production”, and Coordinator of the Outreach Project “Rumos Mais Pretos”.
She works in the fields of communication and culture, communication for social change (regarding ethnic-racial, gender and class issues), communication for health prevention and promotion, advertising, contemporary Brazilian theories on the advertising phenomenon, consumption studies, cultural and media consumption, audiences and reception.
