Portuguese architect presents his journey through architecture, territory, and civic activism

Miguel Figueira, (born in 1969, in Coimbra) is an architect trained at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, whose practice stands out for its profound social and territorial impact.
He began his career at the Bugio studio with Pedro Maurício Borges, before taking on technical roles in the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho (1997–2014).
In this historic town, he was responsible for landmark interventions such as the escalators on the slope of the historic centre and the High Performance Centre on the bed of the Mondego river, works distinguished by the International Association of Art Critics (AICA).
His work extends to civic activism as the leader of the SOS Cabedelo movement, which advocates for the integration of the sea and surfing into spatial planning.
He is co-author of the manifesto Bauhaus of the Seas and curator of the exhibition O Mar É a Nossa Terra, a project that explores the coast as an eternal flow and partner in shaping the landscape. His work was presented at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2018).
