Exhibition The Cosmorama in Lisbon - Virtual Travels in the 19th Century
An immersive exhibition that relives the visual spectacles of the 19th century through physical recreations and digital technology
The Early Visual Media Lab at CICANT, Universidade Lusófona, is developing a unique exhibition titled Cosmorama in Lisbon — Virtual Travels in the 19th Century, to be held at the Cinemateca Portuguesa in Lisbon, from 24 June to 10 September 2025.
This event is part of a research project led by CICANT and the Institute of Art History (NOVA University Lisbon) — Curiositas: Peeking Before Virtual Reality — and aims to recreate the immersive experience offered by Cosmoramas: travelling image exhibitions that captivated audiences in the 19th century and have since faded from public memory.
The exhibition will offer an engaging and educational experience, giving visitors the chance to explore the Cosmorama through both physical and virtual reconstructions. The initiative is organised in collaboration with the Cinemateca Portuguesa and other national partners.
The exhibition is designed for a broad audience, including academics, media researchers, audiovisual professionals, students, technology enthusiasts, art historians, and members of the general public interested in immersive experiences.
Schedule
The exhibition will be open Monday to Saturday at the following times:
- Monday to Thursday | 2:00 PM – 7:30 PM
- Friday and Saturday | 2:00 PM – 9:30 PM
