From 20 March to 5 April, Cinema Fernando Lopes in Lisbon presents Views on the Abyss:
- Essential Werner Herzog Showcase, an exclusive retrospective dedicated to one of the most unique and influential voices in contemporary cinema.
Over more than five decades, Werner Herzog has built a body of work spanning multiple genres, exploring physical and metaphysical territories where obsession, visionary delirium, untamed nature, and the human condition constantly collide. His filmography interrogates boundaries—geographical, psychological, and moral—and stands as one of the most coherent and radical in modern cinema.
The showcase brings together six essential titles from the director, tracing different phases of his career:
- Signs of Life (1968)
- Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)
- The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974)
- Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
- Lessons of Darkness (1992)
- The Wild Blue Yonder (2005)
Each film will be screened only twice, highlighting the exclusive and unrepeatable nature of this programme, with all copies featuring dual subtitles in Portuguese and English (except films spoken in English, which will have Portuguese subtitles only).
The special screening of The Wild Blue Yonder on 21 March is already confirmed, as part of the À Pala de Walsh Sessions.
With this exclusive retrospective, Cinema Fernando Lopes strengthens its position as a reference venue in Lisbon, combining current cinema with the celebration of the great auteurs who have shaped film history.
