Presentation
Identify application areas of medical microbiology and its relationship with biotechnology. Know the main groups of microorganisms that surround us, their implication in public health and relate them to epidemiology and diseases caused by microorganisms and their vectors. Be able to distinguish the main groups of antibiotics, how they work and the mechanisms that lead to resistance and multi-resistance. In the laboratory component, the objective is to learn laboratory techniques for identifying disease-generating microorganisms. Students should also be able to observe and identify the different groups of microorganisms of medical importance under the microscope: Handle microbial agents under the required hygiene and safety conditions and perform classic biochemical tests and state-of-the-art kits for their identification.

En: A. Theoretical Program: A1. Importance and areas of application of medical microbiology and its relationship with biomedicine. A2. Basic notions of epidemiology and public health. A3. Disease-causing microorganisms from the Bacteria and Archaea Domain, Algae, Fungi, Protozoa, parasites, and vectors. Viruses, prions, propagation, and associated diseases. A4. Study the mechanisms of pathogenicity, resistance, and multidrug resistance of microorganisms. A5. Laboratory diagnostic techniques in clinical microbiology. Examples and case studies. B. Practical Program: Techniques and good hygiene practices in collecting samples of medical importance. Microscopic observation of bacteria, fungi, and parasites is of medical significance. Classic and advanced methodologies for detecting and identifying microorganisms: Comparison of effectiveness between different biochemical methods for identifying microorganisms of clinical relevance. Observation of synergy and antibiotic resistance phenomena.

Knowledge: LO1: Master the fundamental concepts of medical microbiology, including the taxonomy, morphology, and physiology of pathogenic microorganisms. Understanding: LO2: Understand the relationship between medical microbiology and biomedicine, understanding the implications of microorganisms in public health and their correlation with epidemiology. Application: LO3: Apply laboratory techniques to identify disease-causing microorganisms, using advanced and traditional tools and methods, ensuring hygiene and safety conditions. Analysis: LO4: Discriminate between different groups of antibiotics, interpret their mechanisms of action, and identify factors that lead to microbial resistance. Synthesis: Assessment: LO5: Evaluate scientific literature in medical microbiology, considering new advances, discoveries, and techniques, and discern their relevance to clinical practice and biomedical research.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
In the theoretical component, the themes are exposed around support material in the form of presentations in digital format. The presentations are built based on the literature and made available to students in advance to encourage prior study and discussion of topics in class. Scientific articles of current studies that represent the evolution of knowledge will also be presented to stimulate critical thinking and contribute to developing the ability to analyze scientific publications. It is intended encouraging the active participation of students. The laboratory component comprises practical sessions that allow students to apply and consolidate theoretical knowledge using modern techniques and specific equipment. By carrying out experiments, students develop their practical, critical, which are essential in understanding Medical Sciences and similar ones.

Componente Teorica (60%): Dois testes escritos da matéria teórica ou uma frequência global, cuja média final deverá ser > ou igual a 9,5 valores, correspondendo a 40% da nota da teórica + 20% apresentação oral de um tema científico (10 % slides + 10% apresentação). Componente Prática (40%)- 1 relatórios escrito (20%) + poster com apresentação oral (10% poster +10% oral), cuja média final deverá ser > ou igual a 9,5/20 valores. Para aprovação à cadeira o aluno terá com nota mínima de 9,5/20 valores a cada uma das partes (teórica e prática)
The Theoretical Component accounts for 60% of the final course grade and consists of either two written examinations covering the theoretical syllabus or one comprehensive written examination. Students must achieve a final average grade of at least 9.5/20. The theoretical component is weighted as 40% for the written examination(s) and 20% for an oral presentation on a scientific topic, comprising 10% for the quality of the presentation slides and 10% for the oral delivery. The Practical Component accounts for the remaining 40% of the final course grade and consists of one written report (20%) and one scientific poster with an oral presentation (10% for the poster and 10% for the oral presentation). Students must also achieve a final average grade of at least 9.5/20 in the practical component. To successfully complete the course, students are required to obtain a minimum grade of 9.5/20 in both the theoretical and practical components.
