    This course aims at providing the basic concepts related to data communication networks, from its basic usage to planning, design and management of computer networks, both in resources and security roles, allowing a better understanding of the emerging potentials. Information and communication are two of the most important strategic areas for business success. Currently almost any medium to large-sized company in areas from banks and insurance companies to entertainment and health has an IT department where network and data communication professionals have a fundamental role.

Physical Layer - Transmission Media and Technologies 3. Data Link Layer - Basic notions - Services to the network layer - Flow control and error correction 4. Media Access Control sublayer - Channel allocation: Static allocation and dynamic allocation - Multiple access protocols - IEEE 802 standards 5. Network Layer -Services to the transport layer -Routing and congestion algorithms -Internetworking -IP protocol -Sub-netting 6.Transport Layer - Services to the application layer -Transport protocol elements - TCP and UDP protocols 7. Application Layer - DNS protocol - SMTP protocol - POP3 and IMAP protocols - HTTP protocol 8. Network security - Cryptography - Symmetric-key and public-key encryption algorithms

    Objectives

    Upon conclusion of this course the student should: - Understand the concepts, problems and solutions related to digital data transmission. - Understand and be able to develop simple local area network projects. - Recognize the different components in a computer network. - Understand the complexity of metropolitan and global networks. - Interpret and use technical documents related to integrated data communication networks.

    Assessment

    Prova Teórica (50% da Classificação Final):
    - Provas escritas, abrangendo a totalidade da matéria das aulas teóricas e exames nas épocas previstas nos regulamentos.
    - Prova oral, que poderá ser realizada para confirmar qualquer nota obtida na avaliação escrita
    - Nota mínima: 10.0 valores.

     

    Laboratórios (50% da Classificação Final):
    - Conjunto de trabalhos, de frequência obrigatória, com entrega de relatórios, e discussão final.
    - Defesa oral dos trabalhos, para avaliação da compreensão dos trabalhos executados. Os temas dos trabalhos são:
      (1) Familiarização com a ferramenta de análise de protocolos Wireshark
      (2) Familiarização com a Ethernet usando o Wireshark
      (3) Familiarização com o Protocolo IP (Internet Protocol) recorrendo ao analisador de protocolos Wireshark.
      (4) Familiarização com as ferramentas de configuração e resolução de problemas de uma rede e exercício de configuração de uma sub-rede)
      (5) Análise de pacotes TCP
      (6) Análise do comportamento do protocolo NAT
      (7) Análise das principais mensagens do protocolo DHCP
      (8) Análise do protocolo DNS usando a aplicação nslookup e Wireshark
      (8) Familiarização com o protocolo HTTP
      (9) Familiarização com o protocolo TLS, usando o Wireshark.
    - Nota mínima: 10.0 valores.
