Operations Management (OM) deals with the design, management and continous improvement of processes used to create and deliver to clients products and services. In a simple way, OM is the function with the responsability for production and delivery of whatever a firm does as its business. Nowadays, more frequently we are talking about Operations and Supply Chain Management. It covers the operations along the supply chain promoting the relationship with all supliers.

I. Introduction to Operations Management . Basic concepts: Operations and productivity; Business strategy and operations. Project management and control: Project management techniques: CPM/ PERT; Cost - time tradeoffs. II. Process analysis and management. Process analysis and design. Quality management: Statistical process control. Methodology 6-Sigma for continuous improvement. Waiting lines: Models MM1 and MMS. Aggregate Planning: Chase and level strategies. Short-term scheduling: Scheduling: Priority rules for dispatching jobs. III. Supply Chain Management. Concepts. Lean techniques: JIT, Kanban. Inventory Management: ABC analysis; EOQ; Probability models: fixed quantity with constant and random demand, and fixed - period with random demand systems.

Objectives
The objective is to give to the students the concepts and techniques to allow them to understand and work on continous processes of industrial and services operations.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Theoretical lectures supported by multimedia resources. Exercise-solving sessions. Case studies. Problem-solving through the application of Self-Directed Learning methods to understand the course content. Technical study visit. Masterclass with a guest speaker from industry. Knowledge assessment through an individual written test covering all the material taught. Participation and solving of the problems/cases and exercises assigned in class, which count towards the final grade. Students pass the course with a final grade of 10 or higher, in accordance with the Assessment Regulations in force at Universidade Lusófona. Students with attendance below 70% during the academic period will not be eligible to take the resit examination, except in specific justified situations protected by applicable legislation. Examination assessment: written examination, with a passing grade of 10 or higher.
