    The fundamentals of Telecommunications systems are herein approached, with focus on digital modulations, and this unit presents a natural sequence ta the unit of ?Fundamentals of Telecommunications?. This unit presents a strong laboratorial component, that allows for the applied study of the lectured concepts, and the knowledge of the main tools for computational analysis of numerical sequences. The skill set herein acquired is fundamental for high level analysis, that encompass topics from the statistical treatment of communications networks to the design and development of new algorithms.

    1. Base band digital transmission systems. Basic digital modulations: binary ASK, PSK and FSK. Optimum receiver: minimum probability of error, matched filter, integral filter. 2. Optimum receivers and probability of error. Intersymbol interference (ISI), eye diagram, cancellation of the ISI. 3. Memoryless discrete channels. Channel capacity. Channel coding theorem. Capacity of the AWG channel. 4. Channel coding: control of transmission errors. Linear block codes. Hamming codes

    Objectives

    The main goal is to transmit to the students the basic concepts of telecommunications, as well as to introduce the main mathematical and computational tools needed for their treatment. The plan is to: - Present the basics of digital modulations, intersymbol interference and channel coding. In this way the students will be able to understand, develop and design digital communication systems. - Develop a broad knowledge of concepts and principles of telecommunications, which permits the student to apply this knowledge to systems that are governed by the same principles. - Learn, and show how to use, the tools necessary for treatment of numerical sequences. Their application will allow the students to perform a higher-level analysis, such as, e.g., the statistical treatment of a computer network, or design and development of new algorithms.

    Prova Teórica (70% da Classificação Final):
    - Provas escritas, abrangendo a totalidade da matéria das aulas teóricas e exames nas épocas previstas nos regulamentos.
    - Prova oral, que poderá ser realizada para confirmar qualquer nota obtida na avaliação escrita
    - Nota mínima: 10.0 valores.

     

    Trabalhos práticos (30% da Classificação Final):
    - Conjunto de trabalhos, de frequência obrigatória, com entrega de relatórios, e discussão final (de presença obrigatória).
    - Defesa oral dos trabalhos, para avaliação da compreensão dos trabalhos executados;
    - Os temas dos trabalhos práticos são:
    (1) Transmissão em banda base;
    (2) Probabilidade de erro em comunicação banda-base;
    (3) Modulações digitais binárias e transmissão passa-banda;
    (4) Codificação de canal e códigos de Hamming;
    - Nota mínima: 10.0 valores.
