Class Physiology I

  • Presentation

Human Physiology is actually one of the most fundamental areas for biomedical and biopharmaceutical formation. It integrates a diversified knowledge, from cell biology, to chemistry, biochemistry and functional morphology, essential to understand and consolidate pharmacology, therapeutics and toxicology, but also for other clinical specialities.

  • Syllabus

Organization of the human body - fluid compartments. Homeostasis.

    Bioelectricity and electrophysiology

Nerve. Resting and action potential. Conduction and Neurotransmission. Synaptic integration.

Control of physiological functions - the neuroendocrine system:

Nervous System - Central SN and Peripheral SN. Somatic SN and Autonomous SN. Sensory system and sense organs. Integration of somatosensory sensitivity. Nociception.

Endocrine organization - definitions, actions and hormonal regulation. Hypothalamo-hypophysis axis as an example of neuroendocrine integration.

    Consciousness, emotions and behavior

    Integrated functions (multisystem Physiology)

Control of posture, balance and movement.

    Energy balance and metabolism

    Biological rhythms. Sleep-vigil cycle

  • Objectives

By approving this unit the student shall have acquired main fundamentals regarding human        body   organization,  specially focusing homeostasis and respective regulating mechanisms - Nervous and Endocrine Systems. This will lead to a wider integrated vision about the organization of complex organisms, necessary to approach organs and systems physiology as for integrative physiology, all essential to further understand disease and its mechanisms.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

the discipline uses multiple active teaching strategies in order to stimulate deductive reasoning; the use of the Anatomage virtual human body platforms and simulators for physiological signals (e.g.Physioex) are emphasized.
