Teoria 2.1 (Theory of Architecture) belongs to the field of architectural theory and criticism, focusing on the period from the nineteenth-century industrial city to the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933, and on the way that legacy is reactivated today. The unit works on the formation of the architecture student's critical thinking: the capacity to read a theoretical text as an argument and to identify the presuppositions of a position. It is a course unit on the analysis of discourses and methods. It addresses the critical reading of primary sources and establishes that modern architecture arises from a social and material question rather than from a will to style - housing as a problem, new materials as a condition, and the school as a project.

Objectives
Objectives
Identify and historically contextualise the main texts, authors and critical positions that constitute the formation of the Modern Movement, between 1872 and 1933. Precisely define the operative concepts introduced by these texts - the housing question, hygienism, free plan, Raumplan, ornament, standard, workshop - and distinguish their respective fields of application. Critically read a primary source, situating it within the debate to which it responds. Relate the transformation of materials and construction systems to the transformation of space and programme. Translate a theoretical concept into an operative question applicable to a design decision. Construct and publicly defend a well-founded argument, responding to objections and revising one's position when the evidence warrants it. Use sources ethically, transparently and critically, including those generated by GenAI systems, while taking responsibility for the accuracy of the material presented.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
All contact hours of this unit are theoretical teaching (T). The methodologies described take place through lectures, guided discussion and seminar. The exercises are carried out as the student's autonomous work, within the dedicated hours. a) Lectures close with a synthesis that converts the content into an operative question addressed to the ongoing work in the Design Studio unit. b) The study visits are coordinated transversally. c) The exercises rest on analytical redrawing at the same scale and on paired comparison, not on the description of works. d) The visits constitute lectures delivered outside the premises, with guided commentary by the teacher. e) Critical GenAI literacy. f) Moodle platform for deposit of primary texts, reading guides, briefs and returned assessments - inverted classroom.
