Class Organic Chemistry II

  • Presentation

    Presentation

In this lecture, Organic Chemistry II,  the study of the nomenclature / properties / reactivity of the various classes of organic compounds that started in the first year with Organic Chemistry I, will be deepened in order to provide students the basis for the understanding of fundamental concepts in health and in particular in the pharmaceutical field. Solid notions of reactivity will be acquired and the necessary skiklls will be reached to elaborate the mechanisms associated to the reactions involved in the different classes of compounds taught. It is also intended that students understand the importance of the area of organic synthesis and the relevance of this subject in the area of health. This curricular unit is extremely important within the course, since it allows the acquisition of basic knowledge in Health that is fundamental for other lectures, such as Pharmacology, Organic Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology, among others.

REACTIVITY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VARIOUS CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. Study of the structure, nomenclature and properties as well as of the various Syntheses, Reactions and Mechanisms, Structural characterization and Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry, in each of the classes and subclasses of organic compounds studied, namely: 1. ALKENES; 2. ALKYNES; 3. ALCOHOLS; 4. ETHERS AND OXIURANOS; 5. CONJUGATED DIENES; 6. NMR AND IR SPECTROSCOPY 7. BENZENE AND AROMATICITY;     7.1. ELECTROPHILIC AROMATIC SUBSTITUTION 8. ALDEHYDES AND KETONES 9. CARBOXYLIC ACIDS;     9.1 CARBOXYLIC ACID DERIVATIVES 10. AMINES.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The aim of this CU is to continue to allow the understanding of the various classes of organic compounds with regard to their nomenclature, properties and reactivity / synthesis. The chemistry of alcohols will be reviewed, it will be studied the ethers and oxirane, alkenes and alkynes, conjugated dienes, benzene and their derivatives, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines and the syntheses, the reactions, the mechanisms, the regioselectivity and the stereochemistry and structural charcaterization. In the tutorial classes several experiments will be performed, in order to: a) apply the most representative reactions studied and apply the theoretical contents in the analysis and treatment of results; b) familiarize students with the techniques most commonly used in organic chemistry, and the safety measures to take into account in their execution; c) contextualize the experimental application to the health area.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

Organic Chemistry is a challenging subject for students, but innovative teaching and learning methodologies are revolutionizing the learning process. The approaches used in this course include Project-Based Learning, where students apply concepts to real-world problems, stimulating curiosity and collaboration. Another method is the use of educational games to teach concepts, making learning more interactive and engaging. Additionally, the use of virtual reality provides immersive experiences, allowing exploration of molecules and chemical reactions in virtual environments. These methodologies integrate theory and practice, making learning more engaging and relevant, empowering students to apply organic chemistry in the real world.
