    The UC allows the student to acquire knowledge in hematology and blood tranfusions, biochemistry, cytology, clinical microbiology, urinalysis and diagnosis of infectious diseases. After the UC, the student will be more autonomous regarding the choice, practice and interpretation of the various analyzes, using clinical cases and microscopic visualization of samples.

    Syllabus

    1. Blood compatibility and transfusions. 2. Diagnostic tests for main infectious agents in the dog and cat. 3. Practical clinical interpretation of microbiological analyzes; susceptibility tests; resistance markers; resistant / intermediate / susceptible concept. 4. Understanding the basis of observation and interpretation of cytologic preparations. Clinical cytology: Inflammation and infectious agents, neoplasms; observation of slides. 5. Analysis of effusions (peritoneal, pleural and pericardial), synovial fluid, CSF and BAL washes. 6. Urinalysis and urine cytology. 7. Blood cell count (CBC) and importance of blood smear analysis; observation and interpretation of CBC and blood smear. 8. Biochemistry

    Objectives

    Promoting the autonomy regarding the choice of samples needed for different types of analysis, collection tubes, care in the collection / storage and interpretation of artifacts; to acquire knowledge on the interpretation of the CBC and blood transfusions/ compatibility and promote the realization of blood smear and its understanding; to develop techniques of implementation and evaluation of cytology; practical clinical interpretation of microbiological analysis; to develop evaluation capacity of body fluids of different origins; to contribute to the knowledge of the different diagnostic tests for major infectious diseases in dogs and cats.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

    The teaching methodology includes lessons designed to impart training in the techniques described in the course program through discussion of clinical cases, execution of specific laboratory tests and interpreting results. Continuous assessment is based on four quizzes performed during the class. The minimum passing grade is 9.5 / 20. If students where unsuccessful at completion through continuous evaluation, they my resort to evaluation by final exam.
