In this curricular unit, it is intended that students acquire knowledge about the main infectious diseases of dogs and cats, exotic animals, wild animals, including marine mammals, and fish. It provides theoretical and practical knowledge about the respective etiological agents, epidemiology, prophylaxis, pathogenesis, symptomatology, diagnosis, treatment, and control measures.

Syllabus
Vaccination guidelines for dogs, cats, and exotics animals. Infectious diseases of exotic animals. Infectious diseases of dogs. Infectious diseases of cats. Infectious diseases of wild animals. Infectious diseases of marine mammals. Infectious diseases of fish. Visit to the local public shelter "Casa dos Animais de Lisboa". Visit to the medical facilities of wild animals at the Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. Visit regarding infeccious diseases of marine mammals. Necropsy of fish for screening of infectious diseases. Laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases. Vaccine practical clinical cases. Visit regarding infectious diseases of exotic animals.

Objectives
Objectives
To know the main infectious diseases of dogs, cats, exotic animals, wild animals, marine mammals, and fish. To understand the respective etiology, epidemiology, prophylaxis, pathogenesis, symptomatology, diagnosis, treatment, and control measures. To understand the relationships between the host, the etiological agent and the environment, from the initial contact to the resolution of the disease, and the prevention of its dissemination. To know how to structure the clinical thinking in regards to infectious diseases. To know how to define a differential diagnosis, as well as how to choose and interpret the most appropriate diagnostic tests for each disease. To know the expected course of the disease and the existing therapeutic and preventive approaches. To identify the risk factors associated with population medicine and shelter animals. To know how to act with different health institutions (e.g., notifiable diseases), based on the "one health" concept and prevention of zoonoses.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodology: Theoretical classes: presentation of theoretical content using audiovisual resources, promoting student engagement in the discussion of the topics covered. Practical classes: designed to deepen the topics presented in theoretical classes through clinical and laboratory contexts, with the aim of encouraging the consolidation of knowledge and the development of applied clinical reasoning. Guided independent study: supported by the instructors to assist students in their independent learning.

Avaliação contínua:
- Avaliação teórica: 2 frequências teóricas (50% cada). O aluno deverá obter a cotação de 9,5 valores na média resultante de ambas frequências para concluir a avaliação contínua teórica.
- Avaliação prática: média poderada de avaliação de trabalhos ou exercícios práticos a realizar no decorrer das aulas práticas. O aluno deverá obter a cotação de 9,5 valores para concluir a avaliação contínua prática.
Avaliação por exame final:
- Em caso de não aprovação ou falta à avaliação contínua. Deverá obter a cotação de 9,5 em cada prova realizada em exame final para obtenção de aprovação.
Nota final:
- O aluno tem que obter aprovação na componente teórica e na componente prática da disciplina para concluir a disciplina. A nota final corresponde à média aritmética da nota final teórica com a nota final prática.
