Class One Health

The CU is aimed at allocating competences related to core concepts underlying the emerging discipline of One Health. One Health is a transdisciplinary concept connecting human, animal, and environmental health in a holistic approach. The course will provide a broad overview of the historical background, emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, food safety, and environmental health, using integrated approaches to address the respective laws, prevention programs, risk assessment and disease control. The interdisciplinary nature of One Health will be explored in order to better understand how in health, humans, animals and ecosystems are interconnected and interdependent, involving human and veterinary medical sciences, agronomy, environmental, public health and food safety in in particular, including evaluating the performance and compliance of food safety management systems through audits..

1. Introduction to the concept of One Health. 2. Consolidation of the concepts learned in previous UCs: Food Hygiene and Safety and Veterinary Public Health. From Farm to Fork - importance of the food chain. 3. Environmental Health, Environmental Waste Hazards and Sustainability. Agrosystems and Animal Production. 4. The problem of resistance to antibiotics. New legislation and new alternatives to antibiotics. 5. Animal-people relationship. Importance in personal relationships and physical and mental health. 6. Zoonoses, emerging infectious diseases and their implications for Human Health. 7. Globalization and Health 8. Discussion and case studies

Theoretical classes with oral explanation of the theoretical contents using audiovisual aid. Students will be involved through practical case discussions, analysis and discussion of concepts and group and individual work. Field work - The involvement of students is required in the practical application of theoretical concepts in real life situations and seminars, with the participation of national experts from various areas. The Assessment is made through the following modalities to be chosen by the student: Continuous assessment on a frequent presence basis. Theoretical: tests and participation in class (weight 60% and 40%) Fieldwork: Average of the evaluation marks of the practical assignments (weight 70% and 30%) Final Assessment: written theory test and practical assessment if failed the continuous assessment. The final grade of the curricular unit corresponds to the weighted average of 50% of the practical and 50% of the theoretical evaluation.
