Medical Zoology aims to contribute for a wider knowledge of Veterinarians regarding animals that are not studied throughout their academic path and that represent an important portion of veterinary practice, in the scope of both pets and livestock, as well as animal products. This CU also intends to study the morphology, biology and ecology of harmful vertebrates and arthropods, to achieve diagnosis and prophylactic measures, as well as to clarify and discuss curiosities, explore, and divulge new topics and studies, in order to develop the students? interest in this vast and important yet so little explored and neglected field. As such, this CU is a part of and has a strong link to the One Health concept.

Chriroptera - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures; Amphibia - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures; Ophidia - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures; Arthropoda - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures; Araneae - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures; Scorpiones - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures; Synanthropic animals - biology, medical and veterinary importance and control measures (rats, pigeons, seagulls, cockroaches, lepidopterans, ants, and wasps); Fish - biology, medical and veterinary importance, and control measures (poisonous fishes, spiny appendages and teeth or even electrical organs).

Objectives
Display comprehensive knowledge in the identification and basic biology of selected animal species with veterinary interest. Recognize relevant morphological and anatomical features in the taxonomic classification of these animals. Identify the hazards connected to these organisms as well as risk locations and situations. Sampling in safety; Identify important measures in case of contact or accident with these animals.

Assessment will be based on an individual evaluation of the topics covered and a group presentation on one of the visits. Approval is obtained with a minimum grade of 9.5 points..

Avaliação contínua:
a) Os alunos farão uma avaliação individual (50%) no qual aplicarão os conhecimentos adquiridos nas aulas teóricas e práticas.
b) Os alunos farão uma apresentação de um trabalho de grupo (50%) sobre um tema sobre uma das visitas de estudo.
Os alunos devem obter um mínimo de 9,5 valores para aprovar à UC.
