Class Non-Conventional Careers in Veterinary Medicine

This Curricular unit will showcase some lesser-known career opportunities in the veterinary profession. The Curricular unit Unconventional Careers in Veterinary Medicine is a space for promoting the diverse and varied career opportunities available to graduates of the Integrated Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine (MIMV), beyond those that are best known to the general public. It is aimed at all MIMV students and is intended to foster their knowledge, interest and ambition for career alternatives that are of equal value to civil and scientific society, but outside the clinical areas, which are generally seen as the most desirable for veterinarians.

Class sessions will also be conducted in a forum format, where students will be given space to question their preferences and those of their classmates and reflect on what leads them to have certain interests. Opportunities to seek information on the topics covered will be created in and outside of class. Assessment will be based on an individual presentation of each student's career preference to date, where the justification for this preference should reflect an individual reflection on each student's past and future in the veterinary profession (60%). Each presentation will then be assessed by peers, the remaining students, who will also receive a mark for the quality of their assessment of their peer (30%). Participation in class forums will be assessed (10%). The criteria to be assessed are the ability to reflect, critique and communicate. A minimum grade of 9.5 is required to pass.
