The CU has a strong impact on the allocation of competencies for the exercise of activities in the labor market in the field of Veterinary Public health, providing fundamental concepts in the area of Veterinary Public Health within the context of One Health, related to prevention and control of zoonotic diseases. This course exposes students to the various fields that contribute to the successful prevention and control of emerging diseases / zoonotic diseases (OH approach) and food safety (food-born zoonoses), namely: human and animal health and their relationship, the environment, communication, operational and financial aspects of such programs. International tools available for assessment of the capabilities of countries to fulfill the requirements of the International Health Regulations and the Performance of Veterinary Services will also be presented and discussed during classes

1 - The role of Veterinary Public Health in Food Hygiene in food industry, distribution and food service 2 - The role of Veterinary Public Health in in the implementation of Control Systems for the protection of Public Health 3 - Audits and regulatory inspections in Public Health. 4 - Measures to prevent, reduce, destroy contamination. Objectives
1 - Understand the importance of Veterinary Medicine and the DVM in Public Health. 2 - Implement mechanisms for control of food hazards for the consumer, as part of food safety systems. 3 - Familiarize with the national legislation in the field of Public Health and its conformity with European legislation and other international standards. 4 - Understand the role of the DVM in the control of zoonoses, integrated in One Health concept. 5 - Acquire thorough knowledge on various international tools and their practical application towards the evaluation of capabilities of countries to implement programs for prevention nd control of zoonoses and other Public Health hazards

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Theoretical classes with oral explanation of the contents using audiovisual aid. Students will be involved through practical case discussions, analysis and discussion of concepts and group and individual work and seminars. Supervised self-learning: student group study, with the professor supervision Field Research - The involvement of students is required in the practical application of theoretical concepts in real life situations. The Assessment is made through the following modalities to be chosen by the student: Continuous assessment on a frequent presence basis. Theoretical: perform test and participation in class (weight 80% and 20%). Field research: Average of the evaluation marks of the practical assignments (100%). Final Assessment: Written theory test and practical assessment if student failed the continuous assessment. The final grade of the curricular unit corresponds to the weighted average of 50% of the practical and 50% of the theoretical evaluation.
