Class Digital Processes I

  • Presentation

    Presentation

    This course is an intensive immersion into the issues of architectural composition. Based on building form, building assembly, building organization, elevations, plans and sections, students will be asked to master the instruments of vectorial design to analyze issues manifested the by the three dimensions, proportion and formal/programmatic organization. Whilst completing two assigned projects students are asked in their second assignment to introduce an adaptation based on their exploration of Design Intent.

    Syllabus

    Análisys and representation of case studies: Structured and operational knowledge of the main processes and elements in composition, representation and annotation, applied to architecture, in a concept development approach.

    Geometrical composition schemes  - tutorial exercises

    Technical representation applied to previous or ongoing design projects - architectural/conceptual drawing, through the use of computer assisted drawing software, in vectorial basis (CAD), developed in a parametric oriented platform (BIM), both in a two-dimensional and tridimensional perspective, experimenting Boolean composition with extrusion and revolution solids, as well as primitive based shapes;

    Capacity to articulate the technical and technological requirements of digital drawing with the conceptual intentions of a creative process, and develop the abilities to work efficiently in a digital environment;

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    Developing a sequential and structured method, as a learning system of project elements for architectural concept (plans, sections and elevations) focused on a digital interface. Starting with the principles of vectorial drawing (CAD), going through an integrated approach to parametric elements and simulation of architectonical components (BIM).

    The fundamental objectives of this course are:

    • Understanding the requirements of technical drawing, on a digital environment;
    • Develop skills to operate with the with digital tools in vectorial drawings, aiming for the autonomous evolution of each student;
    • Exploring methods of architectural concept and project development, using the adequate digital tools, in conformity with the most innovative and up to date systems;
  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Course with Theoretical and practical approach. Teaching methods will be implemented through tutorial, theoretical and practical classes, complemented by practical jobs to be developed in a heuristic perspective.

    In-class continuous evaluation (50%): Individual exercises 30% - Assiduity and participation: 20%

    Project Work / Other exercises (50%): Individual: 25% - Group: 25%

    2nd Term Exam: In-class exam: 50% - Works/projects and exercises developed during the semester: 50%
