Syllabus
Conservation and rehabilitation of old buildings:
- Different kinds of works for the conservation and rehabilitation of old buildings; causes of decay and strategies for rehabilitation.
Conservation project:
- Structural reinforcements; masonry and its reinforcement; floors and roofs; stonework; traditional plasters; carpentry; ceramic materials and coatings.
Rehabilitation project:
- Compatibility of functions; concept of minimum intervention; How to preserve wood, stone and metals; Regular maintenance.

Objectives
Objectives
(1) Learn the methodologies of the architectural conservation and rehabilitation (including maintenance, repair, rehabilitation and the reuse of the buildings with the new requirements of safety and comfort).
(2) Master survey methodology of ancient buildings.
(3) Learn the basic rules to carry out structural and architectural improvements, in compliance with the main features of the old buildings. Prevent demolitions and promote environmental conservation.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
The teaching methodology includes a diversified strategy with phases of:
¿ Exposure and exemplification;
¿ Discussion and reflection on the themes addressed;
¿ Designing the rehabilitation of an old building.
Students will make a pratical study for de rehabilitation on an ancient building. They will make two presentations of their work. The presentations will be evaluated (values from 0 to 20).
The evaluation is continuous. There will be an attendance sheet during the classes.
