At this CU these questions are the focus to allow an understanding and thinking in action that could mitigate the problems and bring territorial integration.

    1. Characterization and analysis of settlements. Demographic Evolution. Built environment and
    landscape. Characteristics and limitation of local and regional infrastructure. Local and Regional Economic Dynamics;
    2. Methodology of intervention. Analysis, Diagnostic and Prognostic. Strategic Action in small settlements. SWOT methods. Action Plan. Project Management;
    3. Intervention Proposal. Action Plan. Strengths and Weakness. Regional Insertion. Prefered áreas for growth, rehabilitation and heritage protection. Infra-structure programming, social facilities and public spaces. Agricultural and forestry in the influential zone;
    4. Economic Aspects.

    Objectives

    This CU aims at preparing students to act in rural settlements providing the skills and knowledge to understand and the basic urban requirements of those settlements in support to their agricultural and forestry activities in order to be able to intervene in propose urban intervention.
    Focus in maintaining the vitality and sustainability of those urban cores ¿ required condition for their spatial organization and management, aims to fight desertification and landscape deterioration require a technical intervention that is able to balance primary and secondary sectors interests, as well as with the new demands of modernization and the emerging industry and service economic sectors.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The preparation of a transversal work, common to most of the curricular units, which contains the particularities of each UC, is a practice that promotes a specific understanding of the subjects specific to each UC and knowledge of their relationships in the context of work in urban planning, preparing the student to solve complex problems. Seminar classes, where different topics are addressed in a coordinated manner by different lecturers, allow for a broader approach and the consolidation of more comprehensive knowledge in the fulfilment of the course programme.
