Presentation
Presentation
The Course Unit (CU) Hydrology and Ecology of Water Resources addresses the interactions between hydrological processes, hydromorphological and physicochemical characteristics of aquatic systems, and the ecological functioning of river ecosystems. The course analyses how anthropogenic pressures and hydrological alterations at the river basin scale affect the ecological status of water bodies, as well as the assessment and management instruments established under the European Water Framework Directive. It also explores management and ecological restoration strategies, including river connectivity, barrier management and fish passages, and the restoration of riparian vegetation, promoting an integrated approach to sustainable water resources management.

Objectives
Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to: Understand the relationship between hydrological, hydromorphological, and physicochemical processes and the functioning of river ecosystems. Characterize biological communities associated with aquatic systems and their relation to different river typologies. Identify pressures and hydrological alterations at the river basin scale and analyse their ecological impacts. Apply principles for assessing the ecological status of water bodies in accordance with European regulatory frameworks. Understand the importance of river connectivity and evaluate barrier management solutions, including fish passages. Recognize strategies for the management and ecological restoration of riparian systems, including riparian vegetation recovery.

Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Active and participatory learning methodologies will be used, including the analysis of real case studies, discussion of scientific and technical papers, and the use of applied examples related to ecological assessment and river management.
