Class Integrated Management and Sustainability of Water Resources Module - Coastal dynamics and sediment management
-
Presentation
Presentation
The Course Unit Sediment Dynamics and Coastal Management addresses the physical and environmental processes controlling sediment transport and deposition in coastal and fluvial environments, as well as the challenges associated with sustainable coastal zone management. The course explores sediment dynamics mechanisms, environmental impacts related to sediment mobilisation and contamination, and the monitoring and modelling tools used to analyse these processes. It also examines the factors influencing coastal evolution, the causes of coastal erosion, and the different mitigation and management strategies applied to the protection and adaptation of coastal zones.

Syllabus
Sediment dynamics processes in fluvial and coastal systems. Management and mitigation strategies related to sediment transport and deposition. Environmental impacts and pollution associated with sediments. Monitoring and modelling of sedimentary processes. Coastal zone evolution. Causes of coastal erosion and mitigation measures.
-
Objectives
Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to: Understand the main processes associated with sediment dynamics in coastal and fluvial systems. Identify factors influencing sediment transport, deposition, and mobilisation. Assess environmental impacts associated with sediment dynamics and sediment pollution. Understand monitoring and modelling methods applied to sedimentary processes. Analyse coastal zone evolution processes. Identify the main causes of coastal erosion and evaluate mitigation and management measures.
-
Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies
Teaching methodologies will include the analysis of case studies related to sediment dynamics and coastal management. The course will also include discussions of real examples of coastal erosion and mitigation measures applied in different contexts. Digital resources and environmental data will be used to support the understanding of sedimentary processes.
