Class Innovative methodologies in water management module - Strategic planning for adaptation to climate change
-
Presentation
Presentation
The course addresses the scientific foundations of climate change and its impacts on water resources, with a focus on strategic planning for adaptation. Climate scenarios, modelling approaches and impact assessment methodologies are analysed, together with adaptation strategies aimed at increasing the resilience of water and territorial systems. The course combines theoretical foundations with the analysis of case studies and applied examples.

Syllabus
Syllabus
Introduction to climate change science: IPCC concepts, assessment reports, socio-economic scenarios and climate models. Climate change impacts on water resources and response strategies (mitigation and adaptation). Climate modelling and impact assessment: use of climate projections and datasets (AR5, AR6, Euro-CORDEX) and bias correction methods for climate projections. Aridity, drought and water scarcity: concepts, indicators and indices used to assess and monitor these phenomena. Climate change adaptation strategies: planning and implementation of adaptation measures to increase the resilience of water and territorial systems.

Objectives
Objectives
Understand the scientific basis of climate change and key concepts used by the IPCC. Interpret climate scenarios and projections used in climate impact assessments. Assess climate change impacts on water resources, including water scarcity, droughts and floods. Use indicators and methodologies for analysing aridity, drought and water scarcity. Identify and analyse adaptation strategies applied to water resources planning and management.
