This course addresses the main sectoral uses of water and their relevance in the context of integrated water resources management. It analyses water demand and availability across different economic sectors, as well as the challenges associated with the sustainable allocation of this resource. The course also explores alternative water sources, such as treated wastewater reuse and desalination, and examines the importance of environmental flows for the protection of aquatic ecosystems.

Syllabus
Framework and relevance of the main water-use sectors in Portugal (temporal and spatial perspectives). Balance between water availability and demand: water scarcity indicators (WEI+). Alternative water sources: water reuse, greywater and desalination. Environmental flows and their importance for sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems. Water use in tourism, energy production and industry. Agricultural water use and water efficiency in agriculture. Urban water use and challenges related to public water supply.
